High Vitamin C intake may reduce hip fracture risk

November 17, 2008

Just read this in the Framily Practice News:

Of 5,209 men and women in the original Framinham Heart Study cohort, the investigators identified 958 individuals who had participated in the beginning of the osteoporosis study in 1988-1989, had answered a food frequency questionnaire, and had no history of a hip fracture.  The highest users of vitamin C (median of 260 mg/day) had a 70% lower relative risk of hip fracture than did nonusers. Supplements accounted for about 28% of the individuals’ total vitamin C intake.

So, 60mg is normally found in a one-a-day multivitamin. Taking a Mega-Multivitamin will provide you with 1000-1200mg/day which is definitely greater than the 260mg per day of vitamin C noted in the above study.

Don’t forget that many, many fruits and vegetables contain significant amounts of vitamin C, so keep consuming them! Happy healthy eating!
